An IFC model adds spatial context to a Power BI report. A project manager can select a delayed work package and locate its elements in the model, while an analyst can inspect the records behind that selection. The value comes from a reliable relationship between geometry and report data.
Define the decision and the data grain
Start with one question, such as which assets lack handover information or which installation packages are overdue. Identify the source of each measure and decide whether a row represents an element, an inspection, or a scheduled activity.
Use the IFC GlobalId to relate element records. When combining files, retain the model identity as well, and check for duplicate identifiers. If one element has several inspections or cost entries, model that relationship explicitly to avoid counting its quantity more than once.
Load the model using the sample report
The Flinker Power BI setup guide documents the required queries and visual fields.
- Open the sample PBIX report in Power BI Desktop and select Home > Edit Parameters.
- Set the IFC source path. For SharePoint, use the direct file path from the file details and authenticate with your organizational account.
- Apply the changes and confirm that the query loads the intended model.
- For an existing report, copy the IFC loading query from the sample and add the viewer visual.
- Bind IFC Chunks to the corresponding geometry field and GUIDs to the visual's IDs field.

Make filters and measures understandable
Add a small set of filters that match the review task, such as model, storey, discipline, or package. Test the report interactions with a known element and reconcile the totals against the source table.
Keep missing information visible. An element without an inspection record should appear as unverified, not complete. Label quantities with their units and make clear whether progress represents element count, installed quantity, or an agreed weighted measure.
Publish with a defined refresh process
Record the model revision and the reporting date in the report. Updating the source IFC does not prove that the published report has refreshed successfully. Validate the configured credentials, query refresh, and viewer output after a model update.
Review report permissions and the data available to recipients. Source-file permissions alone do not describe access to data already imported into a report.
